Well worth the visit. This is a beautiful urban cemetery with many famous persons interred here. This cemetery rivals Pere Lachaise and beats any New Orleans cemetery for beauty. The range of architectural styles and the cleanliness makes this place unique. Eva Peron and most famous Argentinians are buried here.
What an incredible place full of history. I suggest taking a tour to get the most out of your visit. We didn't reserve a tour before we arrived but found an English speaking tour guide willing to show us around at the entrance. Hearing the stories of the "residents" and the history of the cemetery made our visit so much richer.
Recoleta Cemetery is a unique place in Buenos Aires. The architecture is impressive. Many of the mausoleums are quite old, some are new. It's a public Cemetery and is full. There is a waiting list for new families to get in. If a family does not pay their taxes, their family coffins will be moved to a less desirable Cemetery and their mausoleum will be destroyed, making room for a new family. In this Cemetery, the coffins are wooden and are located above ground. It is a unique experience to visit here.
An extraordinary and historic cemetery that feels more like an open-air museum. The mausoleums are incredibly detailed, showcasing stunning architecture and sculptures from different eras. Walking through the narrow paths gives you a deep sense of Argentina’s history, with many important figures laid to rest here. It’s peaceful, fascinating, and very photogenic. A must-visit landmark in Buenos Aires.
